The community here has a number of experienced casters. Artists pencils and a simple chart work fine for most. You can pay allot or go cheap both work well. You can buy hardness testers to know the hardness of your alloy. There are a number of micro groove designed bullets for you!! I shoot my cast in a number of Mrlins & have found the shallow rifling a challange but not at all insurmountable. Surpass its limits and fouling & Extreem in accuracy can likely occur.īullet designs are NOT all equil. Cast bullets need be kept to lower pressures simply for the ductile strength of lead. But somewhat hard are still preferred for these top velocities. BUT if I cast with a mold cut for a GC, That bullet gets a GC!! Powder Coat negates the requirement for super hard bullets. I also Powder Coat nearly every bullet I cast these days. I shoot & prefer a Plain Base bullet for simplicity & ease. 1800 fps is my target velocity for a hunting rifle shooting cast bullets. Lead is great, but if you want double super sonic use jacketed. Mostly because I dont push my cast to full velocity potential one could achieve with a jacketed. Under 200 is my max & 150 is more likely the max. My personal expectations are 2" 100 as I wont be using cast for any long range hunting. Just yesterday I shot this 5 shot 50y group from a 450 Bolt rifle. You have a nice lineup of known cast bullet calibers there! Cast bullets absolutely can shoot some very impressive groups. With caliber & shooting testing mixed in. I have many posts here on casting I also have a uTube channel largely dedicated to casting & Powder Coating bullets. Im also happy to give my experiences casting for the last 35+ years. but I have come to find a cast bullet that is pretty heavy going just a little slower is giving me great results.įrom Ingot to Target: A Cast Bullet Guide For Handgunners, Table of Contents - Fryxell/Applegate I think your accuracy will go up with consistent bullet weights/ diameter, a gas check or paper patching and you'll have to play with the velocity so I would do a ladder.Īgain this is my opinion. So My cast bullets, which I have hundreds of are patiently waiting to become light plinking/ small game/ Scavenging loads. I'm looking 50 yard jack rabbit accuracy in my mind. ( I don't know that microgroove is best for cast, but again, I am not an expert just reporting my own findings ) My cast bullets for 308 seem to be cast with a bit too much deviation, and so it the future I'd like to experiment with loads using pistol powder, trying to send a 175GR projectile at lower velocities (1400-1700 FPS) instead of the standard 2800FPS and doing research I found plenty of people do it. I would assume closer to the lower of the spectrum of velocity might do it. You can push those numbers up a bit with paper patching, gas checks and things of that nature. I am going to use gas check bullets for all but the mildest loads.Īt what point with these cartridges should I be satisfied?įrom my limited experience and knowledge your velocities should remain lower than a jacketed bullet. For the 35 Rem and 45-70 I want the same, but also would like to hunt with cast bullets. In the 30 and 303 calibers, I want plinking/small game/practice loads. I am starting over with those cartridges but would like your opinion as to what velocities and accuracy standards I should be satisfied with.

I am sure the problems are no gas checks and too much velocity. The bullets are spraying all over the place. My experiments with plain base bullets in 35 Remington (with a microgroove barrel) and 45-70 have been miserable failures. I am reasonably happy with that since I know the rifle is probably shooting better than I am. 1.5" at 50 yards with iron sights and my lackluster skill in a 30-40 Krag sporter using 208g RN gas check cast bullets over AA5744, producing a little over 1700 fps. I haven't started casting yet I am buying commercially cast bullets of unknow hardness.

I want to start loading cast bullets for 308, 30'06, 303 British and 45-70. I have just started loading and shooting cast bullets in 30-40 Krag and 35 Remington.
